Derek is a trial attorney primarily focusing his practice on white collar criminal defense. Derek has served as first-chair trial counsel in over 40 cases throughout his career. Following law school, Derek served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Dallas County District Attorneys office. This experience allowed him to develop his litigation skills as a prosecutor and provide great insight into the government’s strategies from inception to trial. His prior experience gives him the foundation to zealously and aggressively represent his clients.
His litigation practice covers a wide spectrum in white collar criminal defense, including government investigation, healthcare fraud, conspiracy, anti-kickback violations and Stark violations. Further, Derek handles all types of state criminal action from misdemeanor DWIs to felony drug charges.
Derek also provides guidance and counsel to his corporate clients in conducting internal investigations and audits involving allegations of securities and health care fraud, employee misconduct and compliance related issues.
Derek’s practice includes health care audits of physicians’ practices. Derek works closely with his healthcare clients, including physicians, corporations and other business entities in developing compliance and ethics programs. Derek also represents physicians and health care providers in various types of civil matters, including Texas Medical Board.
With business institutions and their executives as well as physicians seeing an increase in investigations, administrative actions, and prosecutions from state and federal governmental authorities, Derek has the knowledge and experience defending these complex cases.
Additionally, in 2017, Derek was honored to be awarded Top 10 Under 40 Criminal Defense Attorney Award for the state of Texas by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys.
Derek was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in business administration before moving to East Lansing, Michigan to pursue his law degree at Michigan State University. Derek also comes from a family of physicians. His father is an OBGYN, brother is a neurosurgeon, sister-in-law is an anesthesiologist, and his sister is a labor and delivery nurse. He devotes his free time to his amazing wife and four children (two sets of twins). Derek is also an avid sports fan. In particular, Derek loves to watch and play soccer and cheers on Liverpool Football Club every weekend.
