This webinar will examine the components of House Bill 274, known as the “loser pays” law, which will affect civil cases filed on or after September 1, 2011. The new law focuses on early dismissal of baseless actions and expedited trial of actions involving less than $100,000. The law changes existing statutes and rules involving interlocutory appeals, offers of settlement, responsible third parties, and recovery of attorneys’ fees and court costs, among others. The speakers will discuss the ways the statute changes Texas civil litigation and appellate practice, comments and analysis from legislators and lawyers involved with the bill, how the bill will be implemented, potential traps for the unwary, and tips for operating under the new law.
