Austin, the capital city of Texas, is known as the live music capital of the world and home to more than 250 music venues and a vibrant arts scene. From authors to activists, artists to athletes, musicians to politicians, peole are drawn to the quirky city, and that legacy continues, as Austin's population has historically doubled every 20 years.
Austin is a city rich in history, beginning originally as a settlement named Waterloo. Settlers from Germany, Sweden and Mexico were the area's original residents, but large periods of development followed, the city was renamed and became the state capital in 1839.
The climate in Austin is humid and subtropical with temperatures in the summer reaching well over 100°F while the winter remains mild with cool nights. Austin is located within the middle of a unique and narrow transitional zone between the dry deserts of the American Southwest and the lush, green, more humid regions of the American Southeast. Its climate, topography, and vegetation share characteristics of both.
Visitors enjoy dipping a paddle into the water at Lady Bird Lake, the smell of a new pair of boots from Allens, the lights on stage at Stubb’s, a cafeteria tray full of brisket, a mural photo-op around every corner, the sound of the Longhorn band, a toe in the water at Barton Springs Pool and so much more.
